How Much Do Family Photos Cost?

You’ve made the decision to invest in a family photo session.  Your next question is likely, “What’s the average cost of family photos?”  The simple answer is ----it depends.

The cost of a family photo session can vary.  Photographers offer their services at a wide variety of price points so it could take some research and effort to find a photographer for family photos that fits your budget and needs.

Each photographer also offers a different level of service.  This means that comparing on price alone is not the best approach.  Determine your needs then do your research, conducting your comparisons by levels of service.  Selecting a family photographer based only on price may leave you disappointed. Always check the photographer’s portfolio to be sure their work matches what you are looking for.

What Factors Affect the Cost of a Family Photo Session?

Location, equipment and professional photo editing are top factors that can affect the cost of a family photo session.  Other things to consider in photography pricing are prints, props and expertise.

Let’s dive into these a little further, shall we?

Location:  There are three location options for family photo sessions; outdoors, the photographer’s studio, and the family home.  If you choose the outdoors or family home options, the cost of your family photo could depend on how far the photographer has to travel to get the job done.  Despite any travel fees, the price of family photo sessions done in either of these two locations could still be lower as it excludes the overhead cost of using the studio.

Props:  This family photography price factor will depend on the style you’re trying to create for your family photo session.  Some photographers have ready-to-use props [KD1] included in the final cost of their services.  There is also the possibility that you may have to purchase your own props, something you may want to budget into your photo session despite the fact that it is not a fee paid to the photographer.

Equipment:  Equipment is the most obvious cost of the family photo session. Photographers invest in high-quality cameras and other tools, such as reflectors, storage devices, and lighting equipment to take those beautiful family photos. These overhead expenses affect the overall cost of their services.

Editing: Post-productions services can also affect the average cost of family photos. These include services such as editing and uploading photos as well as software needed to achieve a desired look.

Expertise:  An experienced photographer with an extensive portfolio will come at a higher price than your young nephew who dabbles in family photography.  (Besides, shouldn’t he be in the family photo too?) Hiring a skilled family photographer backed up by a portfolio you love will likely result in a family photo that is treasured for years to come.

Get All Information Before You Commit

Avoid surprise fees or disappointment by ensuring that you have all the information before you commit. Be aware that not all photographers deliver every image from a family photo session. Some also have a sitting fee with the option to purchase prints and digitals separate.
